“The wood was silent, still and secret in the evening drizzle of rain, full of the mystery of eggs and half-open buds, half unsheathed flowers. In the dimness of it all trees glistened naked and dark as if they had unclothed themselves, and the green things on earth seemed to hum with greenness.”
~ D.H. Lawrence, Lady Chatterley's Lover
Happy Earth Day!
"We rich nations, for that is what we are, have an obligation not only to the poor nations, but to all the grandchildren of the world, rich and poor. We have not inherited this earth from our parents to do with it what we will. We have borrowed it from our children and we must be careful to use it in their interests as well as our own. Anyone who fails to recognise the basic validity of the proposition put in different ways by increasing numbers of writers, from Malthus to The Club of Rome, is either ignorant, a fool, or evil."
~ Moses Henry "Moss" Cass
Cass was a member of the Australian Parliament from October 25, 1969 to February 4, 1983. On 13 November 1974, when Cass was Minister for the Environment, Heritage and the Arts, he gave a speech in Paris to the meeting of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development. This is thought to be the origin of this quote. He now a Patron of the Sustainable Living Foundation and chair of the Australian National Biocentre [1]. He is an Honorary Fellow at the School of Social and Environmental Enquiry, University of Melbourne.
